Solving Teacher Shortages: Attracting and Retaining a Talented and Diverse Teaching Workforce

Teacher Shortage upcoming 920b

Across the nation, teacher shortages are causing districts to scramble to find qualified teachers in math, science, special education, bilingual education, and other fieldswith the most severe shortages in the highest-need schools. On September 15, the Learning Policy Institute convened leaders from government, education, business, and parent and community organizations for a timely discussion of this critical issue.

The day-long forum, Solving Teacher Shortages: Attracting and Recruiting a Talented and Diverse Teaching Workforce, featured new data from the Institute and partners on the extent and nature of current teacher shortages, and highlighted research on recruitment and retention strategies that provide effective long-term solutions. The forum also included breakout sessions covering such topics as the equitable distribution of qualified teachers, creating school environments that support students and teachers, and developing and expanding quality pathways to teaching.
