California’s Emerging Teacher Shortage: New Evidence and Policy Responses

The conference was co-sponsored by the Learning Policy Institute LPI), Policy Analysis for California Education, and the Education Policy Center at AIR. The program featured new evidence on the scale of California’s emerging teacher shortage, including research presentations and panel discussions on high-need fields and regions.

The day’s events included a release of the LPI's report, Addressing California’s Emerging Teacher Shortage: An Analysis of Sources and Solutions. Lead author and LPI President and CEO Linda Darling-Hammond provided the keynote for the day, and coauthors Patrick M. Shields and Leib Sutcher presented report findings. Senator Carol Liu, Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Education, provided opening remarks. Policymakers, researchers, and educators participated in panel discussions on teacher recruitment, preparation, and retention.
