Hanna Melnick

Research Analyst and Policy Advisor

Hanna Melnick co-leads the Early Childhood Learning team. She is the lead author of Understanding California’s Early Care and Education System and Building an Early Learning System That Works: Next Steps for California. She is also a member of the Deeper Learning team, with a focus on school climate and social-emotional learning. She is the lead author of Encouraging Social and Emotional Learning In the Context of New Accountability.

Previously, she taught for 4 years as a Teach for America corps member in the San Jose Unified School District and later in an Aspire Public School in East Palo Alto. After leaving the classroom, Melnick worked for Berkeley Unified School District and Pivot Learning Partners on issues related to California’s Local Control Funding Formula. She also consulted for the Alameda Early Care and Education Council on the coordination of public preschool and subsidized childcare and served as a researcher for the Center for Cities and Schools.

Melnick holds an M.P.P. from the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley and a B.A. from Harvard University with a concentration in Social Studies.
