On February 12, 2019, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he has appointed Learning Policy Institute’s (LPI) President and CEO Linda Darling-Hammond to serve on California’s State Board of Education. LPI issued the following statement from the Board of Directors regarding the appointment.

The Learning Policy Institute’s Board of Directors congratulates our President and CEO Linda Darling-Hammond on her appointment to California’s State Board of Education—a recognition of her contributions to education policy within the state and nationally. California is at a significant juncture with regard to education, having made substantial progress in recent years, yet having a considerable distance still to travel to provide equitable and empowering education for all of its children. We know that Dr. Darling-Hammond possesses the background, expertise, and knowledge of research and policy that can help the state make the changes and investments that will lead to a more equitable and high-quality education system.

In the few short years since its founding, the Learning Policy Institute has established itself as a leading organization focused on conducting and communicating research to inform education policy and practice. Its outstanding work has informed the development of educational improvement initiatives at the national level and in many states across the country. Governor Newsom’s appointment of Dr. Darling-Hammond demonstrates recognition of the value of ensuring that education policy and practice are supported by evidence.

As members of LPI’s Board of Directors, we are committed to ensuring the organization continues to inform policy decisions by conducting and publishing high-quality, non-partisan, and independent research. To that end, we have done our due diligence to ensure separation between Dr. Darling-Hammond’s roles as president of LPI and as a member of the State Board of Education.

As California enters this new era under a new governor, we know that the state will benefit greatly from Dr. Darling-Hammond’s dedication to equity, skillful teaching, and effective strategies for preparing all students for productive futures, including college, career, and active civic participation.
