California Teacher Shortage by County

After many years of teacher layoffs, school districts around California are hiring again. But there is mounting evidence that there are not enough fully qualified teachers to meet current staffing needs. Thousands of permits and waivers are being issued, allowing underqualified individuals to teach California students. This is especially true in high-need fields, such as math, science, and special education.

The interactive map below enables you to investigate different indicators of a teacher shortage at the county level. Hover or click over a county to see how that county level indicator compares to statewide averages. Browse and compare different indicators to understand how your county is experiencing the shortage relative to other counties and California as a whole. More about the indicators.
