Millions of students, families, and educators are suffering in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially those already underserved. As educators and policymakers address the current crisis, there is also an opportunity to implement evidence-based, equity-focused approaches to education and to rebuild systems to strengthen learning opportunities for all students.
Learn MoreThe COVID-19 crisis has widened gaping inequities within the American education system, disproportionately harming students of color, students from low-income families, students with disabilities, and other at-risk students, as well as the educators and communities who support them. Amidst the turmoil, it is clear that education cannot return to business-as-usual.
Yet there is reason to hope. This time of disruption offers policymakers and educators an opportunity to reinvent education systems that are evidence-based and equity-focused. These approaches can both address the current crisis and build long-term systems capacity.
The Learning Policy Institute is providing research-based strategies and other resources to support states, districts, and schools in the areas of:
- Addressing existing inequities exacerbated by the pandemic
- Protecting the health and safety of students, educators, and families
- Identifying policy opportunities for federal and state leaders
- Implementing more adequate and equitable uses of funding
- Providing educator workforce supports
- Reopening and reinventing schools
Regardless of the approach taken to instruction or the medium through which school takes place—online, in person, or a hybrid— these resources support policymakers and educators seeking strategies that ensure all children can participate in supportive and meaningful learning experiences, during and after COVID.
