Teacher Shortages

The United States has experienced persistent and deepening teacher shortages for decades. These shortages, which are more prominent in some subjects and some regions, impact student outcomes and well-being, and affect underserved students at higher rates. Kickstarted by the 2008 Great Recession, the steady decline in fully prepared teachers has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of factors influence teacher supply and demand, and these factors vary by state. Yet substantive research points to various policies and programs that would foster teacher recruitment and retention and ensure all students have access to well-prepared professionals in the classroom.
